Can You Drink Alcohol And Achieve Your Health And Fitness Goals?

With the festive season upon us, a topic that might not be popular but definitely needs addressing is... alcohol.

We know that a lot of people like the odd glass of wine (or two) and there is nothing wrong with that. But there are things you can consider so that it doesn't hinder your progress.

Let's say you've had a stressful day at work, it's the weekend or you just fancy a glass in the garden because the sun is out (unlikely, but stranger things have happened!) Being able to have a drink without worrying about it or feeling guilty is possible!

There are many reasons why people reach for the bottle and it can be challenging to maintain a calorie deficit. With the calorie content of some wines being so high, it can become tough to achieve fat loss.

We want to give you a few tips so you can still enjoy that alcoholic drink or two guilt-free!

MHR's 5 Tips When Combining Alcohol With Your Fitness Goals

  1. Choose wines that are typically lower in calories. Remember, the sweeter the wine generally the more calories it contains.

  2. If you track your calories, try reducing them slightly in the days leading up to a large consumption of alcohol. This will give you a surplus to enjoy the wine.

  3. Try switching the wine out for an alcoholic drink much lower in calories. For example, a 1.5oz shot of vodka soda contains less than a hundred calories.

  4. Alternate with water to stay hydrated, this will give your body a chance to process the alcohol and fill up your body with something it needs.

  5. Lastly, drink in moderation and preferably with food not on an empty stomach. Eating will help to slow the absorption of alcohol into your system and make your drink last longer.

You can still make progress by planning ahead and maintaining that calorie goal whatever that may be. We don't suggest drinking all the time, but 1-2 drinks here and there won't kill your overall progress.

We hope that you have found this useful and that it's made you aware that you can still consume alcohol and achieve your health and fitness goals. But remember, drink in moderation. If you find it difficult to drink in moderation, it would be a good idea to consider cutting it out completely.
